Retopologizing a Sculpted Hand
This is a practical way to retopologize a hand sculpt before animation or game export. The goal is a clean, even, low-poly flow that keeps the silhouette and hand articulation without losing shape.
Reference workflow
Use this RetopoFlow-style flow for sculpted hands:
- Duplicate the hand mesh first and keep the original sculpt untouched.
- Keep your sculpt as the visual target.
- Use the original sculpted hand as reference, not as the mesh you animate.
- Turn on visibility options that make vertex and face counts easy to inspect.
- Set the sculpt as the shrink-wrap target.
- For a hard-surface style: keep edge flow less curved and focus on joint ring control.
- For a more organic style: keep denser density around knuckles, fingertips, and thumb webbing.
- Work broad to fine:
- Block the whole hand with even quads.
- Add loops at the wrist, knuckle creases, and finger bases.
- Resolve each finger separately, keeping loop consistency from base to tip.
- Mirror and symmetry check: ensure both hands behave as intended, then freeze edge direction.
- Run topology cleanup:
- Check for long thin triangles and flipped normals.
- Remove degenerate poles in hard-constraint zones and reduce extra poles near joints.
- Export one clean hand and one test pose version before moving to armature binding.
Quality checks
- Deform the hand through open/closed positions and confirm no large volume loss around knuckles.
- Check edge flow with viewport smooth-shade + wire overlays.
- Confirm each finger has a predictable loop sequence from tip to metacarpal.
